Because God isn’t so much about being at the mercy of a higher power, it’s much more about being at the mercy of those who believe in the absolutes of heaven and hell. Sure, those places might exist, I’m not the girl to say either way, but in these stories some astonishing things are done in the name of getting to one or avoiding the other.
